CHARACTERISTICS: rough dorsum skin, grayish, greenish or brownish colored and light abdomen; seven to nine protuberances on flanks, coinciding with the ribs, and from where toxines are segregated when threatned.
FOOD: insects larvae, aquatic invertebrates, anphibians larvae, small fishes and newts.
ECOLOGY AND BEHAVIOUR: mainly aquatic; habitat generalist, can occur in artificial wells; detects its prey by olfaction.
